Tables at this meyhane are hot property on a Friday or Saturday night, when locals flock here to enjoy the tasty food and convivial atmosphere. Regulars tend to stick to mezes, choosing cold dishes from the waiter's tray and ordering kalamar tava (fried calamari), folyoda ahtapot(grilled octopus in foil) and Anavut ciğeri (Albanian fried liver) from the menu.

Place is an old-style meyhane (tavern) that, like other old-timers on this street, has stood the test of time and retained a loyal local following. On the top floor of a dishevelled building off İstiklal, Leb-i Derya has wonderful views across to the Old City and down the Bosphorus, meaning that seats on the small outdoor terrace or at the bar are highly prized. Many people enjoy the pricey modern Mediterranean food on offer, but we aren't impressed, so only recommend it as a bar.

One of a growing number of İstanbul restaurants specialising in so-called Ottoman palace cuisine, Matbah offers dishes that were devised centuries ago in the royal kitchens of Constantinople.
